England beat eight-time champions Germany in extra time to win their first ever major women’s title, Sportivation.com.ng reports.

The old rivals slugged it out in a dramatic and keenly contested affair at Wembley on Sunday evening.

Substitute Ella Toone opened the Three Lionesses’ account in the 62nd minute to send a crowd of 87,192 into massive excitement.

However, Germany’s Lina Magull equalised with 11 minutes of normal time to play, her goal forcing the match into extra time.

However, another substitute Chloe Kelly sent home a loose ball from a corner in the 110th of play, with the fans responding with wild jubilation from the stands.

Kelly and her teammates had to wait for the goal to be confirmed before the English side celebrated with ecstasy, knowing the impossible was about to be achieved.

Throughout the match, and extensively the entire tournament, the Three Lionesses displayed passion and resilience.

The ladies showed that they could match any team in the whole of Europe and displaying a high level of spirited performance against a highly successful German side is testament to what coach Sarina Wiegman has built with the team.

Striker Ellen White fluffed her lines a couple times in the first 45 minutes while another important player, Lucy Bronze was denied with a header.

Germany’s Magull’s strike went wide before England’s Leah Williamson scrambled the ball off the line following a corner.

All happened prior to the introduction of Toone, who came on to draw the first blood.

Meanwhile, match winner Kelly only returned to football three months ago after she suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury a long time ago.

The English women’s victory today means England have now won their first major title (men and women) in 56 years.

The last time the country won a major trophy in either the men or women’s tournament was in 1966 when England’s men beat West Germany to lift the World Cup title. That year, England also hosted the tournament.
