Rivers United Crowned NPFL Champions, Narrow Escape For Shooting Stars

Rivers United have been crowned champions of the 2021/22 Nigeria Professional Football League season, Sportivation.com.ng reports. 

The Port-Harcourt based club were presented with the NPFL trophy on Sunday at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium after they finished the season with 77 points from 38 games.

The Stanley Eguma-led side won their last game of the season against Gombe United 1-0 to celebrate their tile in style.

Plateau United finished second with 67 points from 38 games to book qualify for CAF Champions League.

Newcomers, Remo Star ended their impressive season in the third position with 62 points from 38 games to book a CAF Confederation Cup place.

The Sky Blue Stars defeated Niger Tornadoes 3-0 in Ikenne on Sunday courtesy of a hat-trick from influential forward Andy Okpe.

Katsina United, Heartland FC were relegated on the final day of the season, Wikki Tourist condemned to a 2-0 defeat in Bauchi.

Heartland 1-0 win over Kwara United at the Okigwe Stadium was not enough to keep them in the NPFL as they finished in the 17th position to go down to the NNL.

Shooting Stars escaped the drop by whiskers after losing 2-1 to Kano Pillars in Kano to finish 16th.

MFM FC lost 1-0 at home to Nasarawa United to end a miserable campaign which saw them relegated to the NNL.
