Sierra Leone defender Osman Kakay has said Sierra Leone are in high spirit ahead of Thursday’s 2023 AFCON qualifiers against Nigeria’s Super Eagles in Abuja.

Nigeria and Sierra Leone will begin their 2023 qualifying campaign inside the Moshood Abiola stadium in Abuja as the match will be played behind closed doors.

Jose Peseiro’s side would be seeking for a first competitive win over the Leone Stars since October 2008.

Meanwhile, Sierra Leone would be aiming for a first victory against the Super Eagles since April 2001.

When both sides met in their latest encounter, the Leone Stars came from 4-0 down to draw 4-4 in Benin City before the return leg in Freetown finished goalless.

While speaking ahead of Thursday’s game via a video published on Sierra Leone FA’s Twitter handle, 24-year-old Kakay said: ”The boys are in good spirit, we are preparing for the games against Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau.

There’s been talks going round misrepresenting what I’ve said but I’m a professional footballer I respect every opponent I play against.”

Kakay, who plays as a defender for Queens Park Rangers stated that he hopes they are able to give their fans back at home what they want.

“Hopefully me and the team can go out there and put our hearts on the line for Sierra Leone and give the fans back home what they want,” Kakay added.

Coach Peseiro’s reign as Super Eagles gaffer began with two losses to Mexico and Ecuador respectively in International friendly games.

Nigeria lost 2-1 to Mexico on May 28 and 1-0 to the South American side on June 2.
