Lyon have won the 2021/2022 UEFA Women’s Champions League title after beating Barcelona Femini 3-1 on Saturday in Turin.

The French side have now claimed their eighth Champions League trophy following the emphatic victory over tournament favourites Barcelona.

Lyon were heavy underdogs and it was understandable due to the Spanish side’s blistering form this season. Asisat Oshoala and her Barcelona teammates had lost only once this campaign as they won the Spanish League title, winning 30 out of 30 games.

Amandine Henry opened scoring with a superb long-range effort before the lead was extended by Ada Hegerberg’s header.

Hegerberg only just returned to the competition for the first time since being sidelined for 20 months due to injury.

The Norwegian striker has now scored an amazing 59 goals in 60 Champions League appearances.

She assisted Lyon’s third goal which was converted by Catarina Macario to the shock of the fans and the Barcelona team.

Reigning Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas scored Barcelona’s only goal of the encounter just before the break with a low strike – her 33rd goal of the season and 11th of this Champions League campaign.

The Spanish outfit, led by manager Jonatan Giraldez did everything they could in the second half to get back into the game but Lyon held on strong.

Barça had won 41 games and lost only once in all competitions prior to the final but were completely humbled by this impressive French club.

On the night, Lyon manager, Sonia Bompastor became the first individual to win the Women’s Champions League both as a player and manager.

The 41-year-old was part of the successful Lyon sides that won back-to-back European titles in 2011 and 2012.
