Nigeria’s U20 national male football team, the Flying Eagles have emerged champions of the 2022 WAFU Zone B tournament after comprehensively beating Benin Republic 3-1 in the final on Friday.

In the game played in Niamey, Niger Republic, Tolulope Ojo grabbed a brace while Ibrahim Muhammad secured the victory for the Nigerian team.

Benin Republic’s only goal of the encounter was scored by Farid Edou.

The Flying Eagles drew the first blood five minutes before half time through Ojo who converted from the spot after Mahougnon Aloya denied a goalscoring opportunity with his arm. The referee wasted no time in sending him off for the act.

Ojo extended the lead with his second as he volleyed past the Benin Republic keeper to make it 2-0.

The third goal was then netted by Muhammad in the 77th minute after he intuitively took advantage of an error by the opposition goalkeeper Dava Agossa.

Benin were able to grab a goal of theirs in the 84th minute when Edou scored to make it 3-1.

Both Nigeria and Benin Republic will now represent the WAFU Zone B at the 2023 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations tournament holding in Egypt.

The continental tournament will serve as the qualifiers for the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Indonesia with the top four teams (semifinalists) all heading to the World Cup.
