Nigeria’s U20 male national football team, the Flying Eagles have booked a place in the 2023 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations taking place in Egypt.
Ladan Bosso’s boys defeated Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 after extra time in the second semi-final of the U20 WAFU Zone B tournament in Niger Republic on Tuesday.
Nigerian player Daniel Daga drew the first blood in the first half but the Ivorians levelled on the stroke of halftime.
Both sides tried everything within their powers to find an important winner after 90 minutes but could not, forcing the encounter into extra time.
Ibrahim Yahaya scored a penalty for the Flying Eagles to help them seal a vital victory and advance to the final of the U20 WAFU Zone B tournament.
Daga, who scored the first goal for the Flying Eagles, was named Man of The Match.
Nigeria will now face Benin Republic in the final of the competition on Friday, 20 May, 2020.
In the other semifinal played on Tuesday, Benin Republic won Burkina Faso 2-1 to qualify for the final and also next year’s U-20 AFCON.
The top four teams (or semifinalists) at next year’s U-20 AFCON will qualify to the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup scheduled to hold in Indonesia.
