Super Falcons of Nigeria striker Asisat Oshoala has emerged the top scorer of the women’s Spanish topflight with Barcelona Femeni.
Oshoala, who missed a number of matches during the course of the season due to injury, scored 20 goals.
The 27-year-old netted the 20 goals in 19 league matches and will share the award with Brazilian Geyse Ferreira. The latter scored 20 times in 27 league outings for Madrid CFF.
The award was confirmed on Sunday following Barcelona Femini’s 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid at Estadio Johan Cruyff.
Although Oshoala was brought on in the 63rd minute of the encounter for Jenifer Hermoso, she could not make it among the goalscorers.
Irene Paredes opened the scoring in the 11th minute before Aitana Bonmati extended the lead 12 minutes later.
Amanda Sampedro scored the consolation goal for Atletico in the 64th minute.
Oshoala joined Barcelona in July 2019 from Women’s Super League side Arsenal.
By winning the Pichichi award, the Nigerian forward, who was absent for eight weeks during the season, became the first Nigerian to achieve the feat.
She also helped Barcelona win the league title without a single defeat, winning 30 out of 30 games. The team scored 159 goals and conceded only 11 in the process.
Oshoala and her teammates will now turn their attention to the UEFA Women’s Champions League final against Lyon at Juventus Stadium on 21 May.
After that, they will face Real Madrid Women in a last-four encounter of the Copa de la Reina at Santo Domingo four days later.
