Newly relegated English side Watford have announced the appointment of Rob Edwards as their new manager from the end of the current league campaign.

Edwards’ appointment comes on the back of his departure from recently-crowned League Two champions Forest Green Rovers.

The Rovers had earlier stated that talks between Watford and Edwards took place “behind our backs”.

Incumbent Watford manager Roy Hodgson is expected to depart the Vicarage Road outfit when the current season ends.

Owner of Forest Green Rovers, Dale Vince informed the media: “It takes a bit of the shine off winning promotion. If there’s any karma in football they’ll languish in the Championship and we’ll meet them there in a few years’ time.”

“He [Edwards] said he’d been advised by Watford and his agent to keep it a secret from Forest Green which I think is pretty poor from them. It’s poor from Rob and he knows it…”

Watford have been relegated from the Premier League after defeat by Patrick Vieira-tutored side Crystal Palace on Saturday.

In a statement, Watford said: “Rob had a contractual provision allowing him to leave Forest Green Rovers at any time to discuss employment opportunities at other clubs and the Hornets are delighted to confirm our discussions concluded today.”

39-year-old Edwards will become Watford’s eighth permanent manager since the beginning of 2018.

The former Wales international began his Rovers coaching career last summer. He once managed England’s youth teams and guided the Gloucestershire club, which entered the Football League in 2017, to the first promotion from League Two.

Edwards has previously overseen Wolves on a temporary basis and Telford United on a permanent contract.
