Rafael Nadal has beaten American John Isner in the Italian Open as the Spaniard maintained his record of remaining unbeaten in back-to-back matches on clay.

The 35-year-old was beaten by Carlos Alcaraz last week in the Madrid Open last-eight but returned to his favourite court with a resounding 6-3 6-1 victory over Isner.

The win sends Nadal straight into the third round.

Nadal, who had received a first-round bye, faced stiff opposition a few times during the match but eventually showed superiority to edge out Isner in straight sets.

He will now face Canadian world number 16 Denis Shapovalov in the next round in Rome.
