Rivers United are now seven points clear at the top of Nigeria Professional Football League following their 5-0 demolition of MFM FC in Port Harcourt on Sunday, Sportivation.com.ng.

The home side took the lead 17 minutes into the encounter via a Nelson Esor tap in from a rebound.

However, two minutes before the half hour mark, the match was halted as a result of a waterlogged pitch but play continued after some waiting period.

Enigmatic forward Chijoke Akuneto extended Rivers United’s lead just before the conclusion of the first half, controlling Eyinnaya Kazie’s attempted shot before blasting home against his former employers.

Akuneto, George Akpabio and Ishaq Rafiu netted further goals for the hosts.

Meanwhile, Plateau United slipped further down in the race for the league title after losing 2-1 to Nasarawa United in Lafia.

The Solid Miners went ahead through Sunday Okereke with just four minutes in the clock before Chimezie Izuchukwu levelled matters for Plateau United in the 43rd minute.

The home side restored their lead when Chinedu Ohanachom scored in the 55th minute.

Defending champions Akwa United and Aba giants Enyimba Int’l FC played out a 1-1 draw at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.

Bello Babatunde scored a fantastic free-kick in the 40th minute to hand the home team the lead.

However, Enyimba equalised through their top scorer Victor Mbaoma in stoppage time, to the disappointment of the Promise Keepers.

In Ibadan, Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) narrowly defeated visiting Niger Tornadoes 1-0 with the only goal of the encounter coming from Moses Omoduemuke.

The Oluyole Warriors’ player received a pass from Isiaka Mutiu, and beat his marker before coolly placing the ball into the back of the net.

Elsewhere, Kano Pillars fought back from a goal down to defeat Kwara United in Abuja.

The Ilorin-based outfit had taken the lead 10 minutes before the break via Samad Kadiri, who lashed the ball home from an Ayobami Junior assist.

Pillars got the equaliser through Eze in the 52nd minute before Auwalu Ali added another to secure the win six minutes later.

In Makurdi, Lobi Stars also rallied from behind to conquer Katsina United.

A shot from Mustapha Salisu on the edge of the six-yard area found its way into the net late in the first half to put Katsina United in the lead.

Lobi Stars responded through Endurance Ebedebiri and Nanen Imenger to emerge winners of the keenly contested affair.
