Tennis: Tunisia’s Jabeur Wins Madrid Open

Tunisian world number one, Ons Jabeur has won the Madrid Open title after defeating USA’s Jessica Pegula by 2 sets to one in the final on Saturday night to win her biggest WTA title.

Jabeur who defeated Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova in the semifinals won the first set on tie-break 7-5 but lost the second set 0-6, she fought back in the third and final set to win 6-2 with the scoreline ending 7-5, 0-6, 6-2 to win the title.

An excited Jabeur who spoke after the win said, “[Pegula] was really good, putting a lot of pressure, playing kind of the game that I don’t like”.

“As soon as I was 30-0 down on my serve, I was like, ‘Of course you want to make it tougher. Of course you want to suffer here. You don’t want to just finish an easy game,” she said of serving it out.

“When I had the match point, I was like, I had to win it from the beginning, otherwise it’s going to be very tough for me. But I’m very happy and trying to realize that I won today, really she added.

With this victory, Ons Jabeur has become the first Arab woman to win the WTA 1000 title.

The men’s final will take place on Sunday(today) and it will be between Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Germany’s Alexander Zverez.
