Stakeholders Count Gains Of Bayelsa Governors Cup As Tournament kicks off In Yenagoa

Stakeholders in Bayelsa state have counted the gains of the Governor’s cup as the 2022 Prosperity cup tournament kicked off on Monday at the Samson Siasia Stadium Yenagoa with the executive Governor of the State, Senator Douye Diri taking the ceremonial kick-off.

Speaking during the official kick-off ceremony, the Hon. Commissioner for Youth and Sports Mr Daniel Igali said that over Sixty Thousand youths will directly be taken off the streets during the course of the tournament and thanked the state government for supporting the tournament.

Also the director of sports in the state, Sir Braveman Wodi said that the tournament will keep the youths of the state engaged while helping to discover and nurture talents, it will also serve as a training grounds for referees in the state as they look to be at the national and international level.

The director of sports also added that the tournament will help to bolster the local economy and also help to reduce crime rate during the duration of the tournament.

In the opening match, defending champions Okolobiri FC now known as Gbaraine Selected Stars lost 2-1 to Bayelsa Medical University in a match played at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa to bow out of the tournament.

Action will continue across the various centers on Friday at the community level.

This is the 4th edition of the Bayelsa Governor’s cup and it’s tagged “The Prosperity cup” with over two hundred and six teams taken part making it the biggest grassroots tournament in the country.
