Villarreal and Super Eagles forward, Samuel Chukwueze scored his seventh goal of the season for his club but the Yellow Submarines were defeated 2-1 by Deportivo Alaves in the Spanish La Liga on Saturday.

Chukwueze and his Villarreal colleagues were trying to get back on track after a 2-0 setback to Liverpool in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final last week at Anfield.

It was not to be, as Alaves recovered from their previous setback to Mallorca.

Chukwueze’s goal was his first in the league since scoring in a 3-1 away win over Real Sociedad on December 18, 2021.

His tally in the Spanish top tier now stands at three after 23 games this season.

This season, he has also scored seven goals in all competitions for the defending Europa League champions.

Alaves got off to a flying start, taking the lead in the fourth minute due to Victor Laguardia’s goal.

And Alaves extended their advantage in the 31st minute, this time through Gonzalo Escalante.

But, only two minutes into the second half, Villarreal equalized via Chukwueze, but it was only a consolation goal as Alaves held on for the three points.

Villarreal now sits in the seventh position with 52 points, only three points out of a European qualifying slot.
