Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah has been voted the Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) for the second time in his Liverpool career, Sportivation.com.ng reports.

With the latest achievement, Salah is only the ninth player to earn the award more than once.

Stanley Matthews, Tim Finney, Kenny Dalglish, Danny Blanchflower, Gary Lineker, John Barnes and Cristiano Ronaldo also won two FWA Footballer Of The Year awards.

Arsenal great Thierry Henry remains the only player to have claimed the prize more than twice, winning it on three different occasions.

Salah won this year’s award by amassing 48% of the total votes. Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne came second, while West Ham’s defensive midfielder Declan Rice emerged third.

The Egyptian is the leading scorer in the English Premier League with 22 goals this campaign. He has also created 13 assists, more than any other player in the topflight.

Similarly, Chelsea forward Sam Kerr has been named the FWA Women’s Footballer of the Year.

Australia international Kerr, who was announced as the winner earlier on Friday, accrued 40% of the vote. She finishes ahead of Arsenal star and former winner Vivianne Miedema, with Manchester City’s Lauren Hemp placing third.

In a statement, FWA chairman Carrie Brown said: “Both Mo and Sam have been outstanding this season, breaking records for both club and country.

“As well as their performances on the pitch, they are leaders and standard bearers of excellence at their clubs and respective leagues.

“The fact they have won by such convincing margins underlines just how impressive they have been this season which has been recognized by our members.”

Salah and Kerr will receive their awards from the FWA on May 5.
