Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Dr Patrice Motsepe has launched an African Schools Football Programme in Maputo, Mozambique.

In attendance at the groundbreaking event were members of the Mozambican Government, football and business leaders from Mozambique and the entire COSAFA region.

Prior to the launch, Motsepe had met with Mozambique President, His Excellency Filipe Nyusi, a passionate football fan and whose government supports football.

During the Schools Football Programme launch, the CAF President said: “Schools football is at the heart of the long-term development and growth of African football. One of the best investments that we can make to ensure that African football is amongst the best world, is to invest in schools football and football infrastructure for boys and girls at school, amateur and professional level.”

The event, which took place at the Costa do Sol Stadium, was presided over by Motsepe alongside Mozambique’s Vice-Minister of Education, Manuel Basso, the country’s Sports State Secretary, Carlos Gilberto Mendes, CAF 5th Vice President, Kanizat Ibrahim and CAF General Secretary Veron Mosengo-Omba.

Other high-profile figures at the event include football Presidents from Angola, Mauritius, Mozambique, Malawi, Comoros, South Africa and representatives of other African nations as well as the co-founder of the Motsepe Foundation, Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe.

The kick-off of the CAF African Schools Football Programme is the execution of one of Dr Patrice Motsepe’s African youth football development objectives as announced, in April 2021, during a visit in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
