Preparations for the U17 West Africa Football Union (WAFU) tournament has kicked off with as many as 100 players screened in Abuja on Wednesday.

The screening was conducted at the FIFA Goal Project in Package B of the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja.

The tournament serves as the qualifiers for the 2023 U17 AFCON in Algeria, and will take place in Ghana, between June 11 and June 24 2022. Only the two finalists from the West African zone will qualify for the U17 AFCON.

The Golden Eaglets are pitched in Group A alongside Togo and host nation Ghana. In Group B are Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Niger Republic and Benin Republic.

Nigeria have won the U17 World Cup a record five times (China 1985, Japan 1993, S. Korea 2007, UAE 2013 & Chile 2015).

Current coach of the Golden Eaglets, Nduka Ugbade captained Nigeria to victory at the maiden edition of the U17 world championship in China in 1985.
