Liverpool brushed aside Manchester United 4-0 on Tuesday to send themselves to the top of the Premier League table, two points above Manchester City.

The Reds completely outplayed Manchester United in what was far from a contest but a totally one-sided affair at Anfield.

Even though it could be a temporary number spot, depending on the result between Manchester City and Brighton on Wednesday night, Liverpool showed no mercy as Jurgen Klopp’s men made the Red Devils utterly poor throughout the entirety of the match.

United – missing top player Cristiano Ronaldo, who was excused due to the death of his newborn son – have their top four hopes hanging in the balance especially with the poor run of results gathered in the past weeks.

Just five minutes into the match, Luis Diaz swept home Mohamed Salah’s delightful pass before the Egyptian scored Liverpool’s second in the first half.

Senegalese forward Sadio Mane, who had assisted Salah’s goal, put the game beyond United with a goal after being assisted by Colombian Diaz in the 69th minute.

The whitewash was completed with just five minutes to the end of the encounter when Salah netted his second of the night.

Liverpool had earlier walloped Manchester United 5-0 at Old Trafford in last October and have now become the first club to score at least eight Premier League goals against United in a single season.

With this defeat, United remain in sixth position on the Premier League table.
