Nigeria Professional Football League sides, Rivers United and Enyimba FC will slug it out with Al Masry of Egypt and Al Ittihad of Libya respectively in the CAF Confederation Cup playoff round.
Rivers United had earlier crashed out from the CAF Champions League after losing 2-1 on aggregate to Al Hilal of Sudan, which saw them drop to the Confederation Cup, while Enyimba dispatched Diambars FC of Senegal home & away and 4 nil on aggregate to advance to the next stage of the second tier competition of African club football.
Also, Bayelsa United’s intent of playing on the continent had earlier been jotted following a 4-1 loss on Aggregate to CS Sfaxien. Similarly, the reigning Nigeria Professional Football League champions, Akwa United were eliminated in the first round after a 2-1 loss on aggregate to CR Belouizdad of Algeria.
The ouster of Akwa United from the Champions League resulted into Nigeria not having a representation in the CAF Champions League group stage for the second consecutive season.
Meanwhile, the duo of Rivers United and Enyimba will continue their Confederation Cup journey with the first leg set to take place on November 28, 2021, while the second leg will be played on December 5, 2021.
