Champions League: Mahrez Shines As Man City Spank Club Brugge

 

Manchester City star Riyad Mahrez extended his impressive Champions League goalscoring record against Club Brugge on Tuesday, Sportivation.com.ng reports.

The Algeria international found the net on two occasions as the Citizens hammered the Belgians 5-1 at the Jan Breydel Stadium.

Following his latest effort, the former Leicester City star has now scored seven goals in his last seven Champions League matches.

Also, Club Brugge is now his favourite team in the tournament having scored more goals against the Blue Black than he had against any other side in the competition (5 goals in 3 games).

His first goal against Club Brugge was on September 14, 2016, as a Leicester City player – a game his former team triumphed 3-0 away from home.

In the reverse fixture on November 22, 2016, he got a goal as the Foxes secured a hard-fought 2-1 win at King Power Stadium.

In the six-goal thriller, Mahrez lined up in attack alongside Phil Foden and Jack Grealish to dent the aspirations of Philippe Clement’s side – who were hoping to consolidate on their 2-1 win at RB Leipzig last time out.

Joao Cancelo gave the English team a well-deserved lead on the half-hour mark, while the Algerian doubled his team’s advantage three minutes before the half time break.

Eight minutes into the second half, Kyle Walker increased the lead with a cool finish while super-sub Cole Palmer put the game beyond the hosts two minutes after replacing Belgium international Kevin De Bruyne.

Six minutes before the full time whistle, the former African Player of the Year completed his brace after being set up by Fernandinho as Guardiola’s men moved to the summit of Group A temporarily, pending the outcome of the Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig game. (Goal)
