Akwa United are champions of the 2020/2021 Nigeria Professional Football League season, after an emphatic 5-2 win over MFM FC at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

Charles Atshimene opened the scoring for the ‘Promise Keepers’ from a close range in the 24th minute.

The Akwa-Ibom based side increased their lead towards the end of the first half when Alimi Adebayo converted Mfon Udoh’s cross into his side’s net.

Prolific goalscorer Mfon Udoh added to the woes of the Olukoya Boys by scoring the third goal for Akwa United two minutes after the hour mark.

MFM FC found some sort of relief when they pulled one back via Michael Mbonu’s goal in the 68th minute.

Atshimene made MFM’s fight for a comeback impossible as he scored his second in the 85th minute to give his side a 4-1 lead.

Gabriel Olelekan’s side added to their tally to make the scoreline more respectable as Dennis Obasi scored MFM second goal.

Star performer, Charles Atshimene completed his hat-trick by scoring Akwa United’s fifth goal at the death of the minute.

The 7 goals thriller saw Akwa United as winners of the Nigeria Professional Football League in 25 years of the club’s history.

They achieved the feat by winning 19 games, drew 14 and lost 4 games, thereby amassing 71 points after 37 games. They also scored 52 goals and conceded 22 goals.

Kennedy Boboye, who won Plateau United’s first league title in the 2016/2017 season has set another record by winning the title with Akwa United for the first time.

Boboye also set a record with Akwa United this season by going on 18 matches unbeaten streak, an accomplishment that has metamorphosed into a title for the Akwa-Ibom side.
