The state finals of the Maltina School Games which was held from the 8th to the 10th of June, 2021 at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, Bauchi has come to a close.
The event featured over 90 schools in Bauchi and winners were selected based on the number of gold medals they had won. The winners each went home with the grand prize of 500,000 Naira and an educational tablet.
Emerging first place with the highest number of gold medals was Divine International Academy while Government Day Secondary School Sa’adu Zungur and Government Junior Secondary School Adamu Jumba came in at second and third place respectively.
Mr. Peter Bulus, Sport Director, Bauchi State Ministry of Sports and State Coordinator of National School Sports Federation (NSSF) confirmed that over ninety students participated in the event. He further revealed the Maltina School Games was a timely intervention to save the dying culture of school sports and more importantly, help to produce quality young and sound minds that could rightly be called leaders of tomorrow.
Aliyu Sambo, a participant from Sa’adu Zungur Secondary School, commended Maltina for organising the competition. In his words, “I participated in the 800 meters race during the competition, which was exciting and encouraging to me. “Government needs to do more to encourage us and organise such competitions among schools in the state,” he continued.
Speaking on the just-concluded event, Senior Brand Manager, Maltina, Elohor Olumide-Awe, said, “The journey has been very fulfilling so far. We are very proud of all the students, especially the winning athletes who will take home the grand prize. We trust that this will be the beginning of greater strides for all of them.”
The President of the Nigeria School Sports Federation, Mr. Olabisi Joseph, ably represented by his deputy, Mr Dickson Tinism, the Vice President 1 cheered the excited athletes with kind words as he urged them to keep the spirit of sportsmanship alive. He further applauded the Maltina Team as well as the NSSF for their immense contribution to school sports development nationwide.
