Scrabble In Bayelsa To Be An Annual Event – Gov Douye Diri

The Bayelsa State Government has said that scrabble will be an annual event in the state following the successful host of the first governor Douye Diri National Scrabble Championship which held in Yenagoa at the weekend, Sportivation.com.ng reports.

The governor who was represented by his deputy governor Sen. Lawrence Edhrujakpo at the closing ceremony of the tournament said the just-concluded championship is going to be an annual event.

“Well the bible says no man who wants to build a house without planning for it, We are like a blind man who says before I want to stone you the stone is already in his hands.

“We are confident that these things we can sustain and we don’t start what we cannot sustain, so clearly we are going to sustain it, it’s going to be an annual event and we are going to ensure that it sustains every year same time same period, and so be rest assured of that.”

“For us, sport is our medicine and so we are using sport to both improved our skills and also develop our health, so be very sure that our sports committee is working very hard and we are improving on what we are getting.

The deputy governor also promised that the state will get it right in terms of sporting development.

“Clearly we are going to get it right, we are going to achieve what we want to achieve in terms of our sports, we got third at the last national sports festival and we are looking forward to coming second or first at the national sports festival so we are going everywhere trying to improve our sport capacity and you know when the governor was sport commissioner he did very well and we expect to do more now that he is the governor he concluded.

Oshevire Avwenagha of Delta state emerged winner of the Master’s category of the inaugural Governor Douye Diri National Scrabble Championship.

The Delta State player recorded 11 wins with a plus 617 cumulative spread to win the trophy and 500 thousand Naira prize money.

Avwenagha who is ranked third in the country topped two other Delta State players, Eta Karo who is ranked second and finished in the second position, and Okiemute Tegha who came third, expressing elation over his achievement.

Raji Kazeem of Oyo State won the Intermediate category competition while Tariye Alari of Bayelsa was the winner in the Opens event, just as Engineer Ojior Osikhena was the winner in the Veterans category.

The school’s title was clinched by 16-year-old Ikoko David of Federal Government College, Odi, Bayelsa State who edged 8-year-old prodigy, Deborah Quickpen.
