Robert Lewandoski ended the 2020/2021 season with a flourish after setting a new record in the Bundesliga with his 41st goal of the season for the Bavarians, Sportivation.com.ng reports.
Lewandoski scored in the last minute of the season against Augsburg to break Gerd Muller’s 49-year-old record of 40 goals in a season in the Bundesliga.
Bayern Munich recorded a 5-2 victory over Augsburg but the spotlight was on their talismanic striker, who has been lethal all season.
The 32-year-old was over the moon after the final whistle despite missing a host of chances before he rounded Augsburg goalkeeper, Rafal Gikiewicz to score a record-breaking 41st goal of the season.
“I really have no words to describe this,” Lewandowski said. “When you try over 90 minutes to score a goal and it is just not happening and then with the last kick of the game you score, then it feels absolutely amazing.”
“I am very happy. This is certainly a highlight in my career.”
“It was difficult for me to remain patient,” Lewandowski said. “But I kept believing that the situation might come and I would have to be ready for it.”
“You have to fight for a record. It does not come easy. I want to thank the team because they are part of this record. It is a special moment, a historic moment.”
Lewandoski is the second all-time goalscorer in the history of the German Bundesliga with 277 goals second only to the legendary Gerd Muller who scored a staggering 365 goals.
He has been linked with a move to the Premier League with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City rumoured to be interested in luring him to England.
Bundesliga To Retain Five Substitutions
The Bundesliga and second-tier Bundesliga 2 will permit five substitutions per match in the 2021-22 season while away fans will be allowed to attend games from matchday three on August 27, the German Football League (DFL) said on Wednesday.
Soccer’s law-making body IFAB gave competition organisers the option of allowing teams to continue using up to five substitutes per game until the end of 2022 and the DFL’s Extraordinary Members Assembly took up the option.
Most matches last season were played without fans due to the Covid-19 pandemic – with away fans barred – and the DFL said matchday three was selected for their return as teams would need to get used to welcoming back crowds again.
“For as long as spectator capacity is still subject to legal restrictions, 5 per cent of the tickets for each game are to be reserved for away fans,” the DFL said.
“Once restrictions are lifted completely, there will be an automatic return to the intended contingent of 10 per cent.”
The new Bundesliga season begins on August 13 with defending champions Bayern Munich playing away at Borussia Moenchengladbach. (AFP)
Nigerian Players Scorecard: Iheanacho, Onuachu And Osimhen On Target Again
Nigerian players across Europe have been showing their mettle since the beginning of the 2020/2021 season and there was no exception over the weekend, Sportivatiom.com.ng reports.
The action started in the Premier League on Friday with the duo of Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi starting for Leicester City. Iheanacho scored the Foxes’ second goal after they went four goals down. He has now amassed 11 goals in the league this season.
Ndidi played for 63 minutes before being replaced by Ayoze Perez. Their performance was not at the optimum level as Brendan Rodgers’ side lost 4-2 to Newcastle at the King Power Stadium.
Prolific goalscorer Paul Onuachu continued in his blistering form as he opened the scoring for Genk in the 57th minutes against Club Brugge in the Belgium Jupiler League. He was subbed off for his compatriot Cyriel Dessers and the tie ended 3-0 in favour of Club Brugge.

Victor Osimhen contributed to three goals in Napoli’s 4-1 victory over Spezia away from home. Osimhen scored a brace in the 23rd and 44th minutes respectively, and also set up Hirving Petagna for the fourth goal in the 79th minutes. He came off for Andrea Petagna in the 83rd minute. The former Lille striker has now registered 10 goals so far in the Serie A this season.
Isaac Success was in action for Watford in his first start of the season against Swansea City. Success increased his side’s tally by scoring the second goal via an assist from Marc Navarro. The game ended in a comfortable 2-0 win for Watford. Meanwhile, William Troost-Ekong was an unused substitute.
Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel played the entire minutes for Stoke City in their game against AFC Bournemouth. Mikel was solid and contributed immensely to Stoke City’s 2-0 win away from home.
Skillful winger Moses Simon was outstanding for Nantes as they dispatched Bordeaux 3-0 at home. Simon created the assist for Randal Kolo Muani to score the third goal in the 70th minutes. He was later substituted for Marcus Regis Coco in the 81st minutes.
Terem Moffi was involved in Lorient’s 4-1 defeat to Lyon. Moffi’s attacking prowess did not yield much as he fired blank. He came off for Pierre-Yves Hamel in the 72nd minutes.
In the Eredivisie, Tyronne Ebuehi featured all through the game for FC Twente against Heracles. Ebuehi’s defensive input coupled with his contribution going forward earned his side a point as the game ended one all.
Still, in the same championship, Maduka Okoye was in between the sticks for Sparta Rotterdam. Okoye kept a clean sheet as Sparta Rotterdam put three unreplied goals past Vitesse at home.
Chidozie Awaziem was solid in defence for Boavista in their home game against Tondela in the Portuguese Primeira Liga. Awaziem held his own all through the encounter, though his team conceded a goal as the tie ended 1-1.
It was a bad day in the office for Simy Nwankwo. His team, Crotone were whitewashed 5-0 by AS Roma.

Semi Ajayi’s impact was not enough to muster a point for West Bromwich Albion as they lost 3-1 to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
Kingsley Ehizibue tasted a bit of action for FC Koln as he was subbed on for Salih Oezcan in the 76th minutes. His late introduction into the game could not alter the scoreline as they were defeated 4-1 by Freiburg.
Henry Onyekuru had 63rd minute under his belt for Galatasary. Onyekuru dazzled through the Besiktas defence a couple of times before being replaced by Muhammed Akturkoglu. Galatasary clinched a 3-1 victory over Besiktas at home.
Bundesliga: Bayern Munich Confirm Boateng Exit
By Taiwo Ibrahim
The 32-year-old has not been offered a new deal a decision that is believed to have caused serious tension behind the scenes.
The Bavarians have already signed his replacement in the person of Dayot Upamecano, who will join at the end of the season from RB Leipzig.
“That was a joint decision of the club management and the coach was also involved,” sports director Hasan Salihamidzic told Sky.
“I explained that to Jerome, he understood.”
David Alaba will also be leaving the club at the end of the season after he turned down a contract extension, but Jerome Boateng was not offered a new deal.
Boateng joined Bayern Munich from Manchester City in 2011 and he was part of the team that won the treble in 2013 and 2020.
It is understood that Hansi Flick does not want Boateng to leave, but the club have decided to let go of the World Cup winner.
“I don’t want to say anything about that. Those are things where I don’t know how they get to the media, but it doesn’t matter,” said Flick (as captured by Tz). “Everyone knows how I feel about Jerome; everyone knows what quality he is. He played a good season, last year too. He is very focused on his job and performs well. He is experienced and has a high quality.”
