Nigerian Players Scorecard: Onuachu, Nwankwo And Iheanacho Paint Europe With Goals

The matches played across Europe over the weekend saw Nigerian players up the ante for their club side, Sportivation.com.ng reports.

In the Spanish LaLiga, Samuel Chukwueze produced a scintillating performance for the yellow submarines by scoring a brace as they humiliated Levante 5-1 away from home. He was substituted for Yeremi Pino in the 81st minute.

Terem Moffi was outstanding in Lorient’s tie against Marseille. He scored two goals which came in the 19th and 70th minute respectively though, it was not enough as his side lost 3-2 at home to Marseille in the French Ligue 1. He was replaced by Adrian Grbic in the 83rd minutes.

Red-hot Paul Onuachu opened the scoring for Genk in the 22nd minutes and scored his second via penalty in the 64th minutes to give his side a 2 nil lead but was overturned by Royal Antwerp FC as they won 3-2 at home. Onuachu has now scored 30 goals in 35 games for Genk this season.

Simy Nwankwo converted a spot kick for Crotone in the 68th minutes, however it couldn’t earn his side a good result as they lost 2-1 to Udinese at home in the Serie A. He has now registered 17 goals for Crotone in the league this season.

Kelechi Iheanacho, popularly called ‘Seniorman Kelz’ continued in his blistering form. He scored the only goal in the FA Cup Semi-final tie against Southampton to send Leicester City into the final for the first time in 50 years. Iheanacho has amassed 10 goals in his last 7 games. His compatriot, Wilfried Ndidi was also involved in the entire minutes, shielding the Foxes’ backline with quality tackles and interceptions.

22 year-old striker, Josh Maja scored from the penalty spot for Fulham in the 59th minutes, after a foul on Mario Lemina by Gabriel Megalhaes. Edward Nketiah’s goal in the 90th minutes secured a point for the gunners.

Victor Osimhen featured for Napoli in the tough tie against Inter Milan. His efforts to score did not come to fruition, and was substituted for Dries Mertens in the 74th minutes. The game ended 1-1.

In the Scottish Cup, Joe Aribo took part in the entire game. His presence in the midfield, coupled with his dribbling skills and key passes was instrumental to Rangers’ 2 nil win over Celtic.

Zaidu Sanusi also played for 80 minutes in Porto’s 1 nil slim victory over Nacional away from home in the Primeira Liga in Portugal. He was solid defensively and helped in the team’s build-up on the left-wing of the attack whenever they bumped forward.

Moses Simon tasted 66 minutes of action for Nantes, but his contribution was not enough as they lost 2-1 at home to Lyon.

The duo of Emmanuel Dennis and Kingsley Ehizibue played for FC Koln against Bayern Leverkusen in the German Bundesliga. The former was involved in the entire 90 minutes, while the latter played for 70 minutes before being substituted for Benno Schmitz. Though their performances could not muster a point for their side as they lost 3 nil to Bayern Leverkusen.

Far away in Russia, Victor Moses featured all through the game for Spartak Moscow against FC Ufa. His attacking prowess didn’t yield anything as his side lost 3 nil at home.

In the English Championship, the duo of William Troost-Ekong and Isaac Success were involved in Watford’s game against Luton Town. Ekong saw the entire action, while Success came in for Philip Zinckernagel in the 46th minutes. Though, Luton Town got the better of Watford in a 1-0 win.

Midfield Maestro, John Obi Mikel was available in the heart of Stoke City’s midfield against Preston North End. He protected his side’s defence as the tie ended in a stalemate.

NNL: Favour Martins Shines as Bayelsa United Beat Crown FC

Two first-half goals from Endurance Ebedibiri and Stephen Wisdom’s twenty five yard shot as well as a brace from Favour Martins gave Bayelsa United a 4-2 victory over Crown Fc of Ogomosho in a matchday fifteen encounter in group B2 of the Southern Conference of Nigeria National League, NNL, decided at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa, Sportivation.com.ng reports.

The visitors took the lead on 24 minutes from a spot-kick when Johnson Ochuku hacked Odudu Sunday inside the danger zone as Waheed Afolabi stepped forward to send Bayelsa United shot-stopper Issiaka Ogoubiyi the wrong way.

Two minutes later, Endurance Ebedibiri restored parity for the hosts through Robert Mizo’s deflected effort. Mizo could have scored again three minutes after the restart but his effort was saved by Crown Fc goalkeeper Adeniyi Sunday.

Favour Martins gave the hosts a life line on 30 minutes after a slick move from Bayelsa United trio of Okardi Inikurogha, Robert Mizo and Stephen Wisdom, just before the half time break.

Stephen Wisdom sealed victory for the Yenagoa based side with a thunderous strike that could pass for the goal of the season.

After a composed half time performance, the coach Diepreye Teibowei tutored side continued to pile pressure on the Ajilete Warriors but were unable to penetrate with the visitors having learnt some lessons from conceding three goals in the first half.

Martins again on 71 minutes increase the scoreline for Bayelsa United to make it four goals to one. Four minutes later, substitute Ameh Williams reduced the deficit for the visitors after a clumsy defending from Bayelsa United defence line.

The victory leaves Bayelsa United on twenty-three points, one point more than Bendel Insurance whose game against Holy Arrows of Oleh was abandoned on 76 minutes as a result of violence while Crown Fc are on twenty one points and will next host Goddosky Fc while Bayelsa United will travel to Lagos to face Joy Cometh.

Technical adviser of Crown Fc Oladunni Oyekale in a post-match interview with Sports Journalists attributed the defeat to over confidence from players haven taken the lead in the first 20 minutes, describing the loss as his heaviest defeat.

On his part, technical adviser of Bayelsa United Diepreye Teibowei said he was happy to have come from behind to beat Crown Fc despite missing several scoring opportunities.

He pointed out that he was sure of replicating the performance away from home.

Man of the match Favour Martins while thanking God for victory, said he was shocked when the visitors took the lead.

He added that he was working hard to improve his performance away from home.

Nigerian players across Europe have been showing their mettle since the beginning of the 2020/2021 season and there was no exception over the weekend, Sportivatiom.com.ng reports.

The action started in the Premier League on Friday with the duo of Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi starting for Leicester City. Iheanacho scored the Foxes’ second goal after they went four goals down. He has now amassed 11 goals in the league this season.

Ndidi played for 63 minutes before being replaced by Ayoze Perez. Their performance was not at the optimum level as Brendan Rodgers’ side lost 4-2 to Newcastle at the King Power Stadium.

Prolific goalscorer Paul Onuachu continued in his blistering form as he opened the scoring for Genk in the 57th minutes against Club Brugge in the Belgium Jupiler League. He was subbed off for his compatriot Cyriel Dessers and the tie ended 3-0 in favour of Club Brugge.

Victor Osimhen contributed to three goals in Napoli’s 4-1 victory over Spezia away from home. Osimhen scored a brace in the 23rd and 44th minutes respectively, and also set up Hirving Petagna for the fourth goal in the 79th minutes. He came off for Andrea Petagna in the 83rd minute. The former Lille striker has now registered 10 goals so far in the Serie A this season.

Isaac Success was in action for Watford in his first start of the season against Swansea City. Success increased his side’s tally by scoring the second goal via an assist from Marc Navarro. The game ended in a comfortable 2-0 win for Watford. Meanwhile, William Troost-Ekong was an unused substitute.

Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel played the entire minutes for Stoke City in their game against AFC Bournemouth. Mikel was solid and contributed immensely to Stoke City’s 2-0 win away from home.

Skillful winger Moses Simon was outstanding for Nantes as they dispatched Bordeaux 3-0 at home. Simon created the assist for Randal Kolo Muani to score the third goal in the 70th minutes. He was later substituted for Marcus Regis Coco in the 81st minutes.

Terem Moffi was involved in Lorient’s 4-1 defeat to Lyon. Moffi’s attacking prowess did not yield much as he fired blank. He came off for Pierre-Yves Hamel in the 72nd minutes.

In the Eredivisie, Tyronne Ebuehi featured all through the game for FC Twente against Heracles. Ebuehi’s defensive input coupled with his contribution going forward earned his side a point as the game ended one all.

Still, in the same championship, Maduka Okoye was in between the sticks for Sparta Rotterdam. Okoye kept a clean sheet as Sparta Rotterdam put three unreplied goals past Vitesse at home.

Chidozie Awaziem was solid in defence for Boavista in their home game against Tondela in the Portuguese Primeira Liga. Awaziem held his own all through the encounter, though his team conceded a goal as the tie ended 1-1.

It was a bad day in the office for Simy Nwankwo. His team, Crotone were whitewashed 5-0 by AS Roma.

Semi Ajayi’s impact was not enough to muster a point for West Bromwich Albion as they lost 3-1 to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Kingsley Ehizibue tasted a bit of action for FC Koln as he was subbed on for Salih Oezcan in the 76th minutes. His late introduction into the game could not alter the scoreline as they were defeated 4-1 by Freiburg.

Henry Onyekuru had 63rd minute under his belt for Galatasary. Onyekuru dazzled through the Besiktas defence a couple of times before being replaced by Muhammed Akturkoglu. Galatasary clinched a 3-1 victory over Besiktas at home.

NWFL Premiership Play-Off: Dreamstar Ladies FC fined 2.5million Naira

The board of the Nigeria Women Football League headed by Aisha Falode has slammed a N2.5 million fine on Dreamstar Ladies Football Club of Lagos, the team’s coach and founder of the club for abandoning a league game and bringing the credibility of the NWFL Premiership League to public ridicule, Sportivation.com.ng reports.

These sanctions were contained in a letter written to the management of Dreamstars Ladies Football Club and signed by the Chief Operating Officer of the NWFL, Modupe Shabi.

It reads: “The board of the Nigeria Women Football League frowned at the unruly behaviour of Dreamstar Ladies FC of Lagos in the match No: 4 of the ongoing 2020/2021 NWFL Premiership Play-Off played on May 9, 2021, at the University of Benin Sports complex, Edo State.

“Consequently, the following sanctions are hereby imposed on the club: Dreamstar Ladies FC have been fined the sum of One Million, Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N1,500,000) for abandoning the above-named match in the 85th minute of play.

“The club is also fined an additional sum of One Million Naira (N1,000,000) for the unruly behaviour of the Head Coach, Mr. Sheriff Tajudeen and the Founder of Dreamstar Ladies FC, Mr. Abdulrahman Abolore, for bringing the credibility of the league to public ridicule.

“In addition, the Head Coach of Dreamstar Ladies FC, Mr. Sheriff Tajudeen, is hereby suspended indefinitely from all NWFL organised competitions with immediate effect for bringing the game to disrepute.”
